About our methodology

A plain-language statement of who we are, what we do, where the data comes from, and where the limits are.

Who we are

isthereasbestos is operated by the isthereasbestos research desk, a small editorial team that builds utility tools for high-anxiety home ownership questions. We are not a law firm. We are not a medical site. We are not a contractor referral business in disguise. We are a verdict engine with citations.

How the risk verdict is calculated

The popcorn ceiling risk function takes two inputs: home build year and location.

  • Pre-1980: High Risk (Do Not Disturb). Asbestos was the standard ingredient in residential textured ceiling products through 1977; inventory shipped through 1979.
  • 1980 to 1995: Test Recommended. The transitional window. Some manufacturers had switched, others had not. The only way to know is a test.
  • 1996 onward: Low Risk. Residential popcorn ceiling material was effectively asbestos-free by 1996.

Location is used to surface the regulator name, disclosure rule, and abatement cost range applicable to your state or province. State or province does not modify the risk band itself; the manufacturing timeline is national.

Why these year cutoffs

The cutoffs come from three primary sources: EPA's 1977 Clean Air Act ban on asbestos in residential textured paint and patching compounds; documented industry reformulation timelines through the 1980s; and the absence of asbestos-containing residential ceiling product in commercial supply chains by the mid-1990s. Health Canada and CCOHS guidance aligns with these dates for Canadian residential construction.

What we are not

  • We are not a substitute for a certified test. Build year is a probability indicator, not proof.
  • We are not legal or medical advice.
  • We do not perform inspections or testing. We point you to certified labs and contractors.

Affiliate disclosure

Some links on this site are affiliate links. We may earn a commission on test kits purchased through Amazon Associates and on contractor leads referred to partner networks. Affiliate revenue does not change which products we recommend or how we calculate the risk verdict. Where we link to a kit, we link to the cheapest NVLAP-accredited option we can find, not the highest commission.

Editorial process

Material risk bands and regulatory data are reviewed against primary sources (EPA, OSHA, CDC, Health Canada, named state and provincial regulators) on a quarterly cadence. Cost data is refreshed annually against HomeAdvisor and Angi published ranges, then verified against a small sample of contractor quotes. Errors and corrections welcome at the contact email in the footer.

Liability

Information on this site is for general educational purposes only and does not constitute professional inspection, legal, or medical advice. Build year and location are statistical indicators of asbestos probability, not proof of presence or absence. Always confirm results with a certified laboratory test and a licensed professional before any disturbance, renovation, or remediation work. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of the information presented and disclaim liability for any decisions made based on this information.
